10 MUST eats in Uganda

oming from culinary china, and being asked what one eats in Uganda, here is my top10list:

1. Matooke is cooking banana, steamed in matooke leaves and eat with groundnut sauce and stew. Matooke everywhere, but I did not eat it at least up to last Monday, when I was invited to a lunch-meeting at worlbank office. It taste little bit like banana, otherwise very stampfy soft texture, and you have to eat it fast before it becomes hard.
2. Fried Tilapia! is definitely the best dish here ! its Victoria lake fish. small, soft white flesh, and especially when fried or barbecued really delicious!
3. Samosa ( or S’m’S) thanks to all the Indians (“Asians”) here in Uganda, Samosas are one of the best 7 cheapest street & lunch snack.
4. Pocho is corn mash, which I normally wouldnt go for. But that is what my dogs love to eat. He doesn’t like canned expensive meat, but rather prefer this cheap dish with dried fish or bones.
5. Nyama Choma the Ugandan answer to “chuarrrrrrrs” barbecued meat pieces. But only available as whole chicken legs, kidneys or bananas. Either its to greasy or to dry, and it is not spicy at all…. They Sold at the road stops upcountry its naybe also not advisable for picky stomachs..
6. ROLEX no, not the watch. Its an omelette wrapped in chapatti bread. Sometime tomatoes. But as street food maybe probably pretty dirty.
7. fried cassava which i haven’t tried it yet, but wrote in a Chinese biofuel study a whole chapter about it…
8. -10. chips yes, chips with beef, chicken or fish, that is what you probably order in any restaurant upcountry.

That is not really excotic and inspirational food, eh? so I started cooking myself (!) again and even invested in a vegetarian cook book, cause vegetables are cheap here , and noodles& rice too. There are some okay restaurants, especially the Indian food is good, and Italian too

and there is one thing locally available in plenty, whcih makes a whole meal: BEER , but that is another Top5 story

rainrain go away!

who ever thought africa is a hot country and it never rains.... that is so not true! uganda not only has a very active rainy season (which is apparently on now), but also saw the heaviest rainfalls in the last generation. just as everywhere in east & we(s)t africa. and that heavily hit the poor people upcountry, where mudhouses are flodded and collapsing, streets are washed, harvest is destroyed, and even simple things such as hose and racks are flodded away, leaving the households with nothing. 400.000 people in northern uganda are affected.
and they even move back to their IDP (internal displaced person) camps, which they just left the last months during peace process, seeking shelter and relief services (such as boats!).

while i am blogging this, i am sitting in a nice Wlan cafe, with the name: CATCH THE SUN, what a contradiction! outside its raining and raining....

back for good

since sunday evening i am back in uganda. the 2,5 weeks china went rapid like a rabbit. i had the feeling i only had welcome & farewell dinners. it was as dynamic as ever: bringing working, shopping for uganda, and meeting my friends all under one wig all in 24hours. and this time i even enjoyed the traffic- so relaxed and organized. and my beloved camera was repaired within one day for free!! (therefor the pictures i took where very limited...)
thanks to all of you for making my shorttrip so super, especially HP and vicky&alex, Henry&svenja where i could explode my chaos. sorry to those i could not met and call (tao, sal and Olivia i am reallyrreally embarresed!!!!) it was a really great time, did not felt i was away the last 4 month. now in kampala it does not felt i had 2,5 weeks in china. only the 5 new pairs of shoes are a reminder......

JuiZhaiGou National Park

MISS WORLD toilet

continueing my china-world tour, via Xi'an i am now since Saturday in JuiZhaiGou national park. THE natural habitat park of china. it is absolutely beautiful, see pictures here , or some of mine picture i will post these days.
attending a eco-tourism conference and advising on better toilet solutions, we are accomodated in HolidayInn Paradise village. pretty unique style , too. we wondered if the red banner over the door meant us: 'warmly welcome beauties worldwide' but then we saw the answer: 52 ladies, dressed in highheels and short skirts in outside temperatures of 10 degrees. Its the MISS BEAUTY CONTEST, showing off here. I asked them if there is also a MISS beauty Germany, but there isnt. so i spontaniously suggested if i can take that position. the ladies, maybe 20 cm taller then me, checked me from bottom-to-top and from top-to-bottom. Imagine their look: like the princess in the FrogKing fairytale, or maybe if i asked them to read a book!
damn, and this with my new haircut!
but i decided i can go for MISS WORLD Toilet. thats easy & and more fun! and i dont have to wear huuuge sunglasses for dinner.....
